A vector-tiled GIS platform mapping and monitoring tens of thousands of physical assets for field and office teams in real time.
A regional utility responsible for critical infrastructure needed to map, inspect, and maintain tens of thousands of physical assets — poles, transformers, pipelines, valves, and more. Legacy CAD exports and siloed databases meant field crews carried outdated paper maps, while office planners waited hours for spatial queries to complete. As regulatory pressure increased, leadership demanded a single authoritative geospatial system that both crews in the field and analysts at headquarters could rely on.
Performance was non-negotiable: maps had to pan and zoom smoothly on tablets in rural coverage zones, and spatial analytics had to return results fast enough to inform same-day maintenance decisions.
Froxfire architected a vector-tiled GIS platform backed by a spatial database purpose-built for asset geometries at scale. We ingested decades of asset records, normalized coordinate reference systems, and generated optimized vector tiles served through a CDN-aware tile API. Interactive web maps loaded only the detail needed at each zoom level, keeping bandwidth low for mobile field teams.
Role-based dashboards gave planners spatial filters, condition overlays, and work-order integration without exporting shapefiles. We rolled out region by region — two territories went live on a shared platform with tenant-aware data isolation — so the utility could prove value before expanding further.
More than 85,000 assets are now mapped and searchable in a single system. Vector tile responses average around 80 milliseconds, making map interactions feel responsive even on constrained mobile networks. Two regions are fully operational on the platform, with field crews and office staff referencing the same live asset layer for the first time.
Maintenance planning cycles shortened because spatial queries that once took minutes now complete in seconds, and leadership has a trustworthy foundation for capital planning and compliance reporting.
The solution layers GIS tooling, vector tile generation and serving, a spatial database for asset geometries and attributes, and operational dashboards for planners and field supervisors. Tile caching, spatial indexing, and progressive data loading keep performance consistent as the asset catalogue grows.
